Wisteria sinensis, commonly called Chinese wisteria, is a flowering plant in the pea family, Fabaceae. W. sinensis is a deciduous climbing vine native to central China. W. sinensis produces large, purple, fragrant, clusters flowers arranged in a drupe. The drupes can be upwards of one foot (30cm) long. Once the flowers fade, long bean-like seed pods emerge. The seed pods can be 6 inches (15cm) long and typically contain 10 to 20 seeds. The foliage is dark green and pinnate consisting of 7 to 13 leaflets. W. sinensis does best in full sun to partial shade with structures or trees to climb. Vines can reach 40 feet (12m) in height when supported. This plant is considered to be deer resistant and can become invasive in warm climates. USDA hardiness zones 5 through 9.
Wisteria sinensis seeds have a hard waterproof outer seed coat that delays germination. For best results, lightly scarify the seeds. Use a nail file, sandpaper, or concrete to scratch through the hard outer seed coat to allow water to more easily penetrate. Soak the scarified seeds in lukewarm water overnight before planting. Sow the seeds ¼ inch (6-7mm) deep in a well draining potting medium. Keep the soil moist, but not soaking wet. Germination for scarified seeds typically takes 1 to 4 weeks to occur, while untreated seeds can take up to two years to germinate. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow or sporadic.
