Weingartia lanata, also known as Rebutia neocumingii var. lanata, is a perennial globus flowering plant belonging to the cactus family of Cactaceae. Weingartia lanata is native to Bolivia and grows naturally in the Andean valleys. The main stem is short and cylindrical measuring 4 inches wide and 8 inches tall at maturity. The plant has many tubercles that often spiral in arrangement and house white glochids that have 0.7 inch long spines. This species is grown as an ornamental plant for its drought tolerance and bright yellow flowers that bloom in early summer. Weingartia lanata thrive in full sun to partial shade and require regular watering through the summer/hot seasons and reduced watering during winter months. USDA plant hardiness zones 9a to 11b.
Weingartia lanata seeds require consistent moisture and humidity to germinate, but soil should not be soaking wet. Cloning boxes, ziplock bags, and other containers that retain moisture are ideal to store sown pots. Keep sown seeds well ventilated to prevent fungal growth. Use a well draining sterilized soil mix. Seeds are extremely small and should be directly sown on top of potting mixture (NOT BURIED). Germinating pots should be kept indoors out of extreme light and heat. Keep sown seeds between 75°F and 85°F for best results. Germination typically takes 1 to 2 weeks to occur. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
