Valeriana officinalis, commonly called valerian, is a flowering perennial plant in the honeysuckle family (Caprifoliaceae) native to Europe and Asia. Extracts from the roots can be used as an anxiolytic and as a mild sedative. Valerian has been used to help treat insomnia for thousands of years. The roots and leaves of the plant contain compounds which act as cat pheromones and have a similar effect on cats as catnip (Nepeta cataria).

Plant the Valeriana officinalis seeds ¼” seep in a well draining potting soil. Keep the seeds moist, but not soaking wet and keep between 70°F to 80°F for best results. Germination typically takes 7 to 25 days to occur.
