Tylecodon paniculatus, also known as the Butter Tree or botterboom, is native to South Africa and Namibia. T. paniculatus can grow up to 6 feet tall and very thick, making it the biggest of its genus. This succulent thrives in hot dry climates. During the hottest and driest months, the T. paniculatus conserves energy by dropping its leaves and photosynthesizing through it’s green stems. Its yellowish papery bark has contributed to its common name, “Butter Tree”. Hardy to zones 9b to 11b.

For optimal germination, plant the seeds ½ inch deep in well draining soil. Keep the soil moist but not soaking wet and keep between 70°F to 80°F for best results. Seeds typically take 10 to 90 days to germinate. Even with optimal conditions, seed germination may be sporadic.
