Taxodium distichum, commonly known as bald cypress, is a deciduous conifer belonging to the Cupressaceae, or cypress family. It is native to the southeastern United States, particularly in areas with swampy, waterlogged soils, including parts of Louisiana, Florida, and Texas. This tree can grow up to 50 to 70 feet tall, with some specimens reaching over 100 feet in ideal conditions, and has a spread of 20 to 30 feet. Its bark is reddish-brown to gray and peels in narrow strips. The leaves are feathery, soft, and bright green, turning a beautiful russet brown in the fall before shedding. Taxodium distichum produces small, round cones that are green when immature, maturing to brown and woody. The tree typically blooms in early spring, with male and female flowers occurring separately on the same tree, but the flowers are not showy. Taxodium distichum is valued for its rot-resistant wood, historically used for building and fencing, and its ability to thrive in both swampy conditions and well-draining soils. It is also used in landscaping, especially in wet areas where few trees can grow. Taxodium distichum prefers full sun and can tolerate both wet and dry soils, making it highly adaptable to a variety of environments. It is particularly well suited for flood-prone areas or rain gardens. USDA plant hardiness zones 4 to 9.
Taxodium distichum seeds require a period of cold stratification to germinate reliably. To prepare the seeds, soak them in water for 24 hours to soften the seed coat. After soaking, place the seeds in a ziplock bag with a small amount of moist, but not soaking wet, sterile substrate (i.e. sand, perlite, vermiculite, or peat moss). Store the bag in the refrigerator for 1 to 2 months to simulate the cold period needed to break dormancy. Ensure the substrate remains slightly moist during this time, but not overly wet to prevent mold. After stratification, plant the seeds about 1/4 inch deep in a well-draining soil mix that is kept moist. Optimal temperatures for germination are between 70-85°F. Germination typically takes 1 to 2 months to occur. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
