Strombocactus disciformis is the only species of its genus in the cactus family, Cactaceae. Strombocactus disciformis is native to Mexico and is endangered in part due to poaching. It is a globos perennial plant with a flattened head and spiraling tubercles. The main stem has bluish green skin and grows up to 3.2 inches tall and 3.6 inches wide. Spines grow up to 0.8 inch long and are white with dark gray tips. S. disciformis is grown as an ornamental plant partially due to its large white or bright purple flowers that bloom during spring through summer. The plant does best in full to partial sun in well draining soil with little organic matter. Water sparingly during summer and do not water in winter for compact growth and the natural flatted top. USDA plant hardiness zone 10b-11b.
Strombocactus disciformis seeds require consistent moisture and humidity, but soil should not be soaking wet. Cloning boxes, ziplock bags, and other containers that retain moisture are ideal to store sown pots. Use a well draining sterilized soil mix. Seeds should be sown on the surface of the potting mixture and lightly covered with a thin layer of sand or the potting mixture, just enough to cover the seeds. Germinating pots should be kept indoors out of extreme light and heat. Ideal germination temperatures range from 75°F to 85°F. Germination typically takes 1-3 weeks. Growth after germination is very slow. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
