Stenocactus crispatus, formerly Echinofossulocactus crispatus, commonly called brain cactus, is a species of cacti with long flattened spines and deep wavy ribs. It is a solitary plant that only grows to only 8 inches tall and 4 inches wide at maturity. Stenocactus crispatus are native to the Chihuahuan Desert in central Mexico. S. crispatus have small purple and pink flowers that bloom in clusters at the apex of the plant which are remarkably beautiful. USDA hardiness zones 9 to 11.
Plant the Stenocactus crispatus seeds directly on the surface of a well draining potting soil. Keep the soil moist, but not soaking wet between 70°F to 80°F. Keep the sown seeds in a humid area, or place in a plastic bag to retain humidity for best results. Germination typically takes 1 to 4 weeks to occur. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
