Sophora secundiflora is an evergreen perennial woody plant in the legume family, Fabaceae. Sophora secundiflora is commonly called Texas mountain laurel and is native to Texas and New Mexico. The plant can grow between 15 and 25 feet tall with an 8 to 10 feet wide canopy. The leaves are leathery and dark green with a simple oval shape. In the spring, the plant exhibits large clusters of deep purple-blue fragrant flowers. After the flowers, 8 inch long gray seed pods populate the tree and hold beautiful red seeds inside which have been used for ornamental and ceremonial uses. Seeds and flowers are known to be poisonous and said to have narcotic properties. The plant thrives in full sun to partial shade and hot temperatures. Plant in well-draining soil that is slightly alkaline. Water adequately when soil becomes dry. The plant is highly drought tolerant once established. USDA plant hardiness zones 7a to 10b.

Sophora secundiflora seeds require scarification of their hard seed coat before sowing. Use a file, sandpaper, or nail clipper to penetrate or remove the outer seed coat. After scarification, soak seeds in warm water for a minimum of 12 hours prior to planting. Sow the seeds ¼ inch deep into a well draining potting mixture. The hardness of the seed coat and proper scarification will dictate germination speed. If done correctly, seeds should germinate between 1 to 2 weeks. Sown seeds require consistent moisture and humidity to germinate, but the soil should not remain soaking wet. Soil should be moist and well-draining, and kept between 70°F to 85°F. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
