Purshia glandulosa, commonly known as Mojave antelope brush, is a shrubby evergreen bush that is in the rose family, Rosaceae. Purshia glandulosa is native to southwestern United States from areas like the Mojave desert and Joshua tree national forest. P. glandulosa grows up to 15 feet tall, although typically shorter, with a 16 foot deep taproot that helps the plant adapt to drought-stressed environments. The leaves are small, bright green, and trifoliate lobed. Small white clusters of flowers bloom from early spring to mid summer and are known to have a pleasant scent. These large clusters of flowers make this species a great choice for insect biodiversity promotion. Purshia glandulosa is grown as a medicinal crop to cure digestive, respiratory, and fever like aliments. P. glandulosa is a drought tolerant plant that thrives in well draining soil and full sunlight exposure. Water the plant thoroughly in the spring, summer, and fall months, and ease back in dormant winter months. Water adequately, allowing the soil to completely dry out before watering again. USDA plant hardiness zones 4 to 9.

Seeds require consistent moisture and humidity to germinate, but soil should not be soaking wet. Cloning boxes, ziplock bags, and other containers that retain moisture are ideal to store sown pots. Use a well draining sterilized soil mix. Seeds should be sown on top of potting mixture and lightly covered with a thin layer of sand or potting mix, just enough to cover the seeds. Germinating pots should be kept indoors out of extreme light and heat. Ideal germination temperatures range from 70°F to 80°F. Germination typically takes 2 to 8 weeks to occur. Before transplanting outdoors, harden off seedlings by gradually acclimating them to outdoor conditions through increasing amounts of sunlight and outdoor temperatures over a week or two. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
