Pinus aristata is an evergreen perennial tree in the pine family, Pinaceae. P. aristata is commonly called the Colorado bristlecone pine and is indigenous to high altitudes in the United States. The tree grows up to 20 feet high with variable mature trunk diameters. Leaves are needle-shaped and have dried resin on them that resembles dandruff. Cones are 4 inches long and are purple when immature, becoming more yellow than brown with age. P. aristata is used to treat kidney, bladder, and respiratory complications. Turpentine from the sap is used to alleviate a wide variety of internal and external wounds. Externally the sap is reliable to treat sores, wounds, and burns. Pinus aristata does best in well-draining soils and in full sun to partial shade. Water adequately when the soil appears dry and allow it to dry out before watering again. USDA plant hardiness zone 4b to 7a.
Soak seeds for a minimum of 24 hours before planting. After soaking, plant seeds at a depth of ⅛ inch, making sure it is not planted too deep. Sown seeds require consistent moisture, but the soil should not be soaking wet. Soil should be moist and well-draining, and remain between 70°F to 85°F for best results. Germination typically takes 3 to 4 weeks to occur. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
