Physalis alkekengi, also known as Chinese Lantern or Winter Cherry, is a herbaceous perennial prized for its striking orange-red, papery calyces that resemble lanterns. Native to Europe and Asia, the plant grows 1–2 feet (30–60 cm) tall and spreads via underground rhizomes, forming dense clumps. The small white flowers appear in summer and are followed by lantern-like husks encasing small edible berries. Often grown for its ornamental seed pods, Physalis alkekengi is a favorite in dried floral arrangements. It prefers full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil. Suitable for USDA Hardiness Zones 3–9.

To germinate Physalis alkekengi seeds, start indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost. Sow the seeds on the surface of a moist seed-starting mix and cover lightly with soil. Maintain temperatures of 70–75°F (21–24°C) and provide bright light. Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Germination usually takes 2–3 weeks. Once seedlings have several sets of leaves, transplant them into individual containers and gradually acclimate them to outdoor conditions before planting in the garden.
