Phyllostachys edulis, commonly called moso or tortoise shell bamboo, belongs to the grass family of Poaceae. Phyllostachys edulis grows to heights between 14 and 30 ft. tall and is the largest species in its family that is able to grow in temperate zones. Phyllostachys edulis is native to China and Taiwan and is used as an ornamental, material, and food crop. New growth shoots are edible and mature shoots are used for furniture and other building materials. Phyllostachys edulis is an evergreen perennial tree like grass that thrives in full to partial sun. Phyllostachys edulis reproduces asexually by rhizomes underground, and sexually through flowers at the tips of shoots. Asexual propagation is most popular as Phyllostachys edulis sporadically flower every half century. This species enjoys cool climates and high altitudes up to 5250 feet above sea level. It is best to grow in containers with well draining, loamy, slightly acidic soil. Water heavily in increments, allowing the soil to dry in between waterings. USDA plant hardiness zone 5a-10b.
Soak the Phyllostachys edulis seeds for a minimum of 24 hours in water prior to sowing, distilled or rain water is ideal. Make sure water temperature is room temperature as extreme temperatures may damage seeds. Use potting soil high in organic matter and space seeds ¼ to half an inch apart. Be sure to not completely cover seeds in soil as they germinate based on light exposure. Cloning boxes, ziplock bags, and other containers that retain moisture are ideal to store sown pots. Keep seeds well ventilated to prevent unwanted fungal growth. Ideal germination temperature is between 70°F to 85°F. It may take up to a month or more for seeds to fully geminate. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
