Passiflora edulis, commonly known as passion fruit, is a vining species of passion flower that is native to southern Brazil, Paraguay, and northern Argentina. P. edulis is commercially cultivated for its sweet, seedy fruit. The fruit, called a pepo, is a berry with a hard rind like exterior and a juicy, seed filled interior and is used for many things from juices to jam to oil, as well as eaten fresh. P. edulis is a perennial vine, with tendrils that are reddish or purplish when young. Vines usually produce flowers with five white petals. Hardy to zones 10-12.

Passiflora seeds contain a hard outer seed coat which can reduce and slow germination. For best results, scarify the seeds by scratching the outer surface with a fine grit sandpaper or nail file, then soak the seeds for 24-48 hours in lukewarm to slightly warm water. After treatment the seeds should be sown between 1/2” to 3/8” deep in a well draining potting medium. Germination can take awhile and be sporadic, taking anywhere from 10-350 days. Properly treating the seeds prior to germination will greatly speed up germination.
