Parthenocissus tricuspidata, commonly called Boston ivy, Japanese Ivy, grape ivy, as well as several other names, is a flowering plant in the grape family of Vitacae native to eastern Asia. P. tricuspidata is a climbing, deciduous, woody vine that can grow up to 90 feet tall if provided the necessary support. It is commonly grown as an ornamental plant and can easily climb vertical masonry walls. Parthenocissus tricuspidata make excellent houseplants when grown in containers. P. tricuspidata are hardy to USDA zones 4 through 8.

Parthenocissus tricuspidata seeds require a period of cold stratification to germinate reliably. Soak the seeds in room temperature water for 24 to 48 hours, then place the seeds in a plastic bag with a small amount of moist, but not soaking wet, sterile potting medium (sand, perlite, vermiculite, folded paper towel, etc.). Place the bag of seeds in a refrigerator for 8 weeks. After the cold stratification is complete, plant seeds on the surface of a well draining potting soil and sprinkle just enough soil on the surface to cover the seeds. Keep the soil moist but not soaking wet. Keep the seeds between 50°F and 70°F for best results. If the seeds get too warm after the cold stratification, a second dormancy can be instilled in the seed, which would require another 8 week of cold stratification to germinate. Germination typically takes 2 to 6 weeks to occur. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
