Parkinsonia aculeata, commonly named palo verde, is a perennial deciduous shrubby tree plant in the legume family, Fabaceae. P. aculeata is native to the southwestern United States and northern Mexico where it grows in dry, arid conditions. This shrubby tree tends to grow 6 to 20 feet tall and has a 5 to 15 feet crown spread at maturity. The bark of P. aculeata is green all around and has small pinnate narrow oval leaves that fall off in dry weather. 2 to 3 sharp half inch spines protrude from each leaf axil and have a reddish color. This species blooms in spring to early summer with bright yellow fragrant flowers. Each of the 5 petals is yellow with orange dot markings and full of nectar, attracting bees and many other pollinating insectects. When establishing a young tree, water the root zone thoroughly to settle the roots into their new home. Water adequately when soil is dry and allow the soil to dry out before watering again. Parkinsonia aculeata is a drought tolerant plant that thrives in well draining soil and full sun but will tolerate partial shade. This species is grown for its lack of maintenance, fast growth, and showy/long lasting flowers. USDA plant hardiness zone 8 through 11.

Parkinsonia aculeata seeds may germinate faster with aid from light scarification although it is not entirely necessary. Light scarification can be achieved with a fine grit sandpaper or file and carefully nicking the hard seat coat, being cautious not to damage the embryo inside. Next sow seeds on top of well draining sterilized soil that is moist, but not soaking wet, and gently press them in but do not burry as they require light to germinate. Make sure sown seeds are consistently moist but not waterlogged. Germinating pots should be kept indoors, out of extreme light and heat. Ideal germination temperatures range from 75°F to 85°F. Germination typically takes 2 to 8 weeks to occur. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
