Oemleria cerasiformis is a shrub with common names such as osoberry, June plum, or Indian plum. O. cerasiformis is the sole species in genus Oemleria, in the rose family of Rosaceae. Plants are dioecious, meaning there are separate male and female plants. Native to the Pacific coast of North America, the plant ranges from British Columbia, Canada to Santa Barbara County, California, U.S.A. O. cerasiformis is among the first plants to leaf out each year, producing clusters of drooping white flowers in early spring. It can grow from 6 to 20 feet high, with green lance-shaped leaves that have a gray-green underside, reaching 2 to 5 inches long. The fruits of O. cerasiformis are edible and resemble small plums which are dark blue when ripe. Indigenous peoples of the Americas use the fruits for food, make tea of the bark, and chew its twigs to use as a mild anesthetic and aphrodisiac among other local uses.  USDA Hardiness Zones 6 to 10.

Oemleria cerasiformis seeds have a much better chance at germination when cold stratified at temperatures around 40ºF for 2 to 4 months. Seeds should be placed in a moist medium such as sand, coco coir, or peat during the cold stratification period. After Cold Stratification, place seeds in a well draining potting mix at temperatures around 70ºF.  Seeds typically take 7-14 days to germinate, but even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
