Nepeta cataria is a perennial herbaceous flowering plant in the mint family, Lamiaceae. N. cataria is commonly known as catnip and is native to Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. The plant can grow up to 40 inches tall and has simple triangular to elliptical leaves. The stem is square and holds cone-shaped flower buds at the tips with spotted white to pink flowers. Nepeta cataria is used as a biocontrol and insect repellent as the oils are known to attract green lacewing populations. The herb is also used for its calming effects on humans and cats. N. cataria is best grown in full sun to partial shade and in well-draining soil. Water adequately when soil is dry. USDA plant hardiness zones 3a to 9a.

Nepeta cataria requires cold stratification pretreatment. This may be achieved by leaving seeds in the freezer overnight. After, soak the seeds in water for 24 hours prior to planting. Plant seeds ¼ inch deep and water lightly. Sown seeds require consistent moisture to germinate, but the soil should not remain soaking wet. Ideal germination temperatures range from 70°F to 85°F. Germination typically takes 1 to 2 weeks to occur. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
