Liriodendron tulipifera is a deciduous perennial hardwood tree in the magnolia family, Magnoliaceae. L. tulipifera is native to the eastern and southern United States and is commonly called the American tulip tree. The tree can grow up to 100 to 160 feet tall with a 4 to 6 feet diameter trunk. The leaves are alternating in arrangement and simple palmately shaped with 4 lobes. The flowers of L. tulipifera resemble tulips and have 6 petals that are light green at the tips and more orange and yellow at the base. Cones at the center of the flower enlarge into seed pods after fertilization and bear numerous winged seeds. Liriodendron tulipifera is grown for its honey as the flowers produce a significant source of honey for the United States. The tree is also grown for ornamental and lumber use. Liriodendron tulipifera grow best in deep, loamy, well-draining soil. Plant the tree in full sun and water adequately whenever the soil is dry. USDA plant hardiness zones 4a to 9b.
Liriodendron tulipifera seeds require cold stratification pretreatment. This may be achieved by leaving seeds in a small amount of sterilized moist, but not soaking wet, peat moss, sand, perlite, or vermiculite inside a refrigerator for 2 to 3 months. Seeds should be sown ¼ inch deep and lightly watered in. Sown seeds require consistent moisture, but the soil should not be soaking wet. Ideal germination temperatures range from 70°F to 85°F. Germination typically takes 2 to 4 weeks to occur. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
