Helenium autumnale or common sneezeweed, is an herbaceous perennial plant in the Asteraceae family that is native to North America. Helenium autumnale can produce as many as 100 yellow flower heads branching out on just one plant. A mature plant grows up to about 4 feet high and has lance-shaped green leaves alternate along the stem. The plant earned its name due to the historic use of dried leaves in snuff blends. Inhaling this snuff causes sneezing, which supposedly casts out evil spirits. The plant is also often grown as an ornamental. USDA Hardiness Zones 3 to 9.
Helenium autumnale seeds do not require any special methods in order to germinate. Seeds should be sown across the surface of any rich and well-draining soil mix. Sprinkle a thin layer of soil across the surface, barely covering the seeds, and keep the soil moist, but not soaking wet. The seed usually germinates within 1 to 2 weeks at temperatures around 70°F. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
