Gymnocalycium occultum, a subspecies of Gymnocalycium stellatum, is a cactus native to a northwest province of Argentina called Catamarca. Belonging to the Cactaceae family, this species of Gymnocalycium is globus and singular with a dark brown to grayish and olive green stem that has a flattened head. The whole plant typically measures 3 to 5 inches in diameter and 2 to 4 inches tall. There are between 7 to 11 ribs surrounding the stem that protrude short dark grayish brown and white spines that slightly curve backwards, making it an easy cactus to handle. The flowers of Gymnocalycium occultum are creamy white and sometimes blushed pink, blooming in late spring to early summer. Gymnocalycium occultum is grown as an ornamental plant for its small size and beautiful flowers.G. occultum grows best in full sun to partial shade while sitting in well-draining soils. Water the plant adequately during summer and keep dry during winter as it is prone to rot. Allow the soil to completely dry out in between waterings. USDA plant hardiness zones 9b to 11b.

Gymnocalycium occultum seeds require consistent moisture and humidity to germinate, but the soil should not be soaking wet. Cloning boxes, ziplock bags, and other containers that retain humidity are ideal to store sown pots. Use a well-draining sterilized soil mix. Seeds should be sown directly on top of the potting mixture. Germinating pots should be kept indoors, out of extreme light and heat. Ideal germination temperatures range from 70°F to 80°F. Germination typically takes 2 to 4 weeks to occur. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
