Gymnocalycium cardenasianum, commonly referred to as chin cactus, is a globus perennial cactus belonging to the Cactaceae family. Gymnocalycium cardenasianum is native to Bolivia and grows on flat lands. The main stem is gray-green measuring 5 inches wide and 4 inches tall with long curved 2 inch white to pale brown spines. Flowers are 1.5 to 3 inches wide and funnel shaped with pinkish color. Flowers bloom sparingly during midsummer and grow from the apex of the stem. It is rare to see a flower open as the long curved spines typically block the flowers from blooming. G. cardenasianum is grown as an ornamental plant for its small size and intricate spine arrangements. Full sun to partial shade in a well draining soil mix is ideal. Water adequately during summer and keep dry during winter as the species is prone to rot. USDA plant hardiness zone 9a-11a.
Gymnocalycium cardenasianum seeds require consistent moisture and humidity to germinate, but soil should not be soaking wet. Cloning boxes, ziplock bags, and other containers that retain moisture are ideal to store sown pots. Use a well draining sterilized soil mix. Seeds should be sown on top of potting mixture and lightly covered with sand or potting mix, just enough to cover the seeds. Germinating pots should be kept indoors out of extreme light and heat. Ideal germination temperatures range from 75°F to 85°F. Germination typically takes 1 to 3 weeks. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
