Gymnocalycium baldianum, commonly called the dwarf chin cactus or the spider cactus, is a species of cacti native to the Catamarca Province in Argentina. G. baldianum are usually solitary plants with a flat to globular stem measuring 5 inches in diameter at maturity. They range in color from blue-green, gray-brow, to almost black depending on individual genetics and light exposure. Gymnocalycium baldianum have 5 to 7 radial spines protruding from areoles at the end of tubricals. They have flowers 1.5 inches long and 1.5 inches wide that are typically a purple-red, but can also be orange, pink, or white. The genus Gymnocalycium is Greek for “naked calyx” in reference to the flower buds lacking spines or hairs. Gymnocalycium baldianum are hardy to zones 8b to 10b.

Sow the Gymnocalycium baldianum seeds on the surface of a well draining potting mix, mist the seeds with a spray bottle, and cover the soil with plastic wrap or a plastic bag to retain humidity. Keep the soil moist, but not soaking wet, and keep between 70°F and 80°F for best results. Once germinated, slowly uncover over several days to acclimate the seedlings to the ambient humidity. Germination typically takes 1 to 6 weeks to occur. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
