Gardenia jasminoides, commonly known as Cape Jasmine, is an evergreen shrub native to China and prized for its intensely fragrant, creamy-white flowers. Glossy, dark green leaves provide a lush backdrop to the blooms, which appear from late spring through summer. Gardenias typically grow 3–6 feet (0.9–1.8 meters) tall and wide, forming a compact, rounded shape ideal for hedges, containers, or foundation plantings. They thrive in acidic, well-draining soil with consistent moisture and partial to full sun. With proper care, this tropical-looking plant adds elegance and aroma to any garden. Suitable for USDA Hardiness Zones 8–11.
To germinate Gardenia jasminoides seeds, soak them in warm water for 24 hours. Then, sow the seeds about 1/4 inch (6 mm) deep in a well-draining seed-starting mix. Cover lightly with soil and maintain temperatures around 75–80°F (24–27°C). Provide bright, indirect light and consistent humidity. Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Germination may take 4–8 weeks. Once seedlings develop several true leaves, transplant them into individual pots and continue growing them in warm, humid conditions until they are strong enough for outdoor planting.
