Ferocactus rectispinus is a globus to columular perennial evergreen plant in the cactus family, Cactaceae. F. rectispinus is commonly known as long spined barrel cactus and is endemic to central Baja California, Mexico. The cactus grows up to 6 feet tall and 1 foot in diameter with a deep bluish green skin. The plant also has 4 to 8 inch long central spines that are straight and not hooked at the tips, giving the species its name. Spines range in color from light gray, yellow, tan, and light red with older spines turning darker and black. Yellow or red flowers bloom in summer and are 2 inches in diameter. Ferocactus rectispinus is grown as an ornamental plant for its long straight spines and showy flowers. Ferocactus rectispinus prefers full sun to partial shade and well-draining soils. Water adequately during summer and keep dry during winter as the species is prone to rot. USDA plant hardiness zones 9b to 11b.
Ferocactus rectispinus seeds require consistent moisture and humidity to germinate, but the soil should not remain soaking wet. Cloning boxes, ziplock bags, and other containers that retain moisture are ideal to store sown pots. Use a well-draining sterilized soil mix. Seeds should be sown directly on top of potting mixture and lightly covered with sand or potting mix, just enough to cover the seeds. Germinating pots should be kept indoors out of extreme light and heat. Ideal germination temperatures range from 75°F to 85°F. Germination typically takes 1 to 4 weeks to occur. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
