Echinocactus platyacanthus, also referred to as giant barrel cactus and golden barrel cactus, is a perennial cactus species in the Cactaceae family.  Echinocactus platyacanthus is native to the Chihuahuan Desert in Central Mexico. This slow growing species is capable of reaching up to 8 feet in height with a 5 feet wide diameter.  Echinocactus platyacanthus has greenish blue skin and has many ribs with large areoles that protrude ridgid black spines. The apex of the plant is flattened with yellow felt hairs. Flowers grow from the apex and bloom during late spring throughout summer and are bright yellow measuring 1 inch wide.  E. platyacanthus is grown as an ornamental plant and can live well over 100 years old and is sought after for its immense size. Full sun in very well draining soil is ideal. Water adequately during summer and keep dry during winter as the species is prone to rot. USDA plant hardiness zone 9b-11b.

Echinocactus platyacanthus seeds require consistent moisture and humidity to germinate, but soil should not be soaking wet. Cloning boxes, ziplock bags, and other containers that retain moisture are ideal to store sown pots. Use a well draining sterilized soil mix. Seeds should be sown directly on top of potting mixture and not covered. Germinating pots should be kept indoors out of extreme light and heat. Ideal germination temperatures range from 75°F to 85°F. Germination typically takes 1 to 4 weeks to occur. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
