Echinacea purpurea or purple coneflower is an herbaceous flowering plant in the sunflower family of Asteraceae. They are native to prairies and open wooded areas of eastern and central North America. They produce large, showy flowers, blooming through the summer months. USDA Hardiness Zones 4 to 10.

Echinacea purpurea seeds should be sown at a depth of 1/8th inch deep in a rich well-draining potting soil mix. Germination can be improved by using a bag or dome to retain humidity. Keep the seeds moist, but not soaking wet between 70-80ºF for best results. Most seeds will begin germinating within 2 to 3 weeks. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
