Dionaea muscipula, commonly known as the Venus Flytrap, is a carnivorous perennial plant native to the wetlands of North and South Carolina. Famous for its jaw-like leaves that snap shut on unsuspecting insects, it has evolved to thrive in nutrient-poor, acidic soils. Each trap consists of two lobes with sensitive trigger hairs, bordered by teeth-like cilia. Plants typically reach 4–6 inches (10–15 cm) tall and wide and produce delicate white flowers on tall stalks in spring. Venus Flytraps require full sun, high humidity, and consistently damp conditions with pure water sources like rainwater or distilled water. Suitable for USDA Hardiness Zones 6–9.
To germinate Dionaea muscipula seeds, cold stratify them for 4–6 weeks in a moist medium at 34–41°F (1–5°C). After stratification, sow the seeds on the surface of a sphagnum moss or peat-based mix with no added fertilizers. Do not cover the seeds, as they need light to germinate. Maintain high humidity, full to bright indirect light, and temperatures around 75–85°F (24–29°C). Keep the soil consistently damp using distilled or rainwater only. Germination usually occurs within 2–6 weeks. Young plants should be kept in high-humidity environments until well-established.
