Dactylopsis digitata, commonly referred to as finger and thumb plant, is a small deciduous succulent in the stone plant family, Aizoaceae. Dactylopsis digitata is native to South Africa and grows in high altitudes. It grows up to 4 to 5 inches tall and has rounded thick leaves that resemble fingers which are alternately arranged. The succulent thumb-like leaves grow up to 2 to 4 inches long. Flowers are white and bloom from the apex in late winter. Dactylopsis digitata is grown as an ornamental crop for its unique leaf anatomy. The plant thrives in well draining soil sitting in full sun to partial shade. Do not water in the summer and water adequately when soil is dry in winter as it is a winter growing plant. USDA plant hardiness zone 10a to11b.

Dactylopsis digitata seeds require consistent moisture and humidity to germinate, but soil should not be soaking wet. Cloning boxes, ziplock bags, and other containers that retain moisture are ideal to store sown pots. Use a well draining sterilized potting mix. Seeds should be sown on top of potting mixture and lightly covered with a thin layer of sand or potting mix, just enough to cover the seeds. Germinating pots should be kept indoors out of extreme light and heat. Ideal germination temperatures range from 60°F to 80°F. Germination typically takes 2 to 4 weeks to occur. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
