Cornus alternifolia, commonly known as pagoda dogwood, is a small deciduous shrubby tree in the Cornaceae, or dogwood family. Native to eastern North America, it is typically found in woodlands, forest edges, and shaded slopes. C. alternifolia grows 15 to 25 feet tall and 15 to 30 feet wide, with distinctive horizontal branching that gives it a layered appearance. Its leaves are alternately arranged (unlike most dogwoods), with simple, ovate, dark green leaves that turn a rich purple-red in the fall. In late spring, Cornus alternifolia produces clusters of small, fragrant, creamy-white flowers that attract pollinators. These are followed by small, dark blue berries on red stalks that ripen in late summer, providing a food source for birds and wildlife. C. alternifolia is grown as an ornamental plant for its unique structure and pleasant clusters of flowers. It prefers partial shade and thrives in moist, well-drained, acidic soils rich in organic matter. It can tolerate full sun in cooler climates if it is provided adequate moisture. USDA plant hardiness zones 3 to 7.

Cornus alternifolia seeds require a period of cold stratification. First soak them in warm water for 24 hours to soften the outer seed coat. Then, place the seeds in a ziplock bag with a small amount of moist, sterile substrate, such as sand, perlite, or peat moss. Store the bag in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 months to simulate winter conditions. After stratification, plant the seeds about 1/4 inch deep in a well-draining soil mix. Keep the soil consistently moist but avoid waterlogging. Ideal germination temperatures range from 60-70°F. Germination typically takes 2 to 3 months. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
