Copiapoa lauii is a small clustering species of cactus native to the coast of chile. The species can be easily identified by its small size, short spines, olive brown epidermis, and bright yellow flowers. Copiapoa lauii grows up to 1.5 to 2 inches tall with a diameter of 2 to 2.5 inches with the top of the stem typically being covered in a whitish wool. The stem also has 15 to 20 ribs that hold short inconspicuous spines that are pale yellow. Copiapoa lauii blooms in late spring to early summer with small bright yellow flowers that typically cluster at the apex of the stem. It is an endangered plant that is grown for conservation and ornamental use for its small size and contrasting flower/epidermis. Water adequate in hotter weather and decrease frequency and amount in colder weather as cacti are prone to rot. Allow the soil to completely dry out in between waterings. USDA plant hardiness zones 9 to 11.

Copiapoa lauii seeds require consistent moisture and humidity to germinate, but the soil should not be soaking wet. Cloning boxes, ziplock bags, and other containers that retain humidity are ideal to store sown pots. Use a well-draining sterilized soil mix. Seeds should be sown directly on top of the potting mixture. Germinating pots should be kept indoors, out of extreme light and heat. Ideal germination temperatures range from 70°F to 80°F. Germination typically takes 2 to 4 weeks to occur. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
