Chamaecyparis obtusa, commonly called Hinoki Cypress, is a slow-growing, evergreen conifer native to Japan. This elegant tree features dense, fan-shaped sprays of glossy, dark green foliage and a naturally pyramidal form, making it a favorite for ornamental gardens and bonsai. Mature trees can reach heights of 50–75 feet (15–23 meters), though dwarf cultivars remain much smaller. Its reddish-brown bark peels in thin strips, adding visual interest throughout the year. Hinoki Cypress prefers moist, acidic, well-draining soils and partial to full sun. Suitable for USDA Hardiness Zones 4–8.

To germinate Chamaecyparis obtusa seeds, cold stratify them for 60–90 days. Place seeds in a damp medium like peat or sand, seal in a plastic bag, and refrigerate at 34–41°F (1–5°C). After stratification, sow seeds on the surface of a sterile, well-draining growing mix and lightly press them in without covering, as light aids germination. Keep the medium consistently moist and maintain temperatures around 65–70°F (18–21°C). Germination can take 4–8 weeks. Once seedlings develop several sets of true leaves, transplant them into larger containers and grow in bright, indirect light.
