Catalpa bignonioides, commonly known as the Southern Catalpa or Indian Bean Tree, is a fast-growing, deciduous tree native to the southeastern United States. Renowned for its broad, heart-shaped leaves and showy white flowers with purple and yellow markings, it creates a striking display in late spring to early summer. This ornamental tree can reach 30–60 feet (9–18 meters) in height and produces long, slender seed pods resembling beans, which persist into winter. Its tolerance for various soil types, heat, and moderate drought make it a popular choice for parks and large gardens, especially where a bold visual presence is desired. Suitable for USDA Hardiness Zones 5–9.
To germinate Catalpa bignonioides seeds, soak them in warm water for 24 hours to soften the seed coat and improve germination. Sow the seeds about 1/4 inch (6 mm) deep in a moist, well-draining seed-starting mix. Maintain a warm environment around 70–75°F (21–24°C) with consistent moisture and indirect light. Germination usually occurs within 2–4 weeks. Once seedlings have developed a set of true leaves, transplant them into individual containers and continue to grow them in bright conditions until they are ready for outdoor planting.
