Carnegiea gigantea, commonly called the saguaro cactus, is a large species of cacti in the family Cactaceae native to the Sonoran desert that can grow upwards of 50 feet tall. C. gigantea have long lifespans, oftentimes exceeding 200 years old and are considered to be a keystone species because they provide food and shelter for a large number of desert animals. Humans also use the cactus fruits as food and the ribs of the stems for building materials. Wood can be hard to come by in the Sonoran desert. The saguaro cactus is a popular image in Mexican culture. C. gigantea usually grows as a solitary stem for 75 to 100 years before producing branches. USDA hardiness zones 8a through 11a.

Plant the Carnegiea gigantea seeds ⅛ inch deep into a well draining potting soil mix. Keep the soil moist, but not soaking wet, and keep between 70°F to 80°F for best results. Keeping humidity high can improve germination, so covering the pot with plastic wrap or a humidity dome can be helpful. Germination typically takes 3 to 14 days to occur. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
