Baptisia australis, commonly called blue false indigo, is an upright perennial that grows 3 to 4 feet high.  It is a North American Native plant that ranges from Pennsylvania, to North Carolina and Tennessee. The flowers bloom on tall stalks extending high above the foliage in spring. Stems with seed pods are valued additions to the dried flowers for floral  arrangements. The genus name Baptisia comes from the Greek word bapto meaning "to dye." USDA Hardiness Zones 3 to 10.

Baptisia australis seeds have a very hard outer coating that should be scarified lightly on sandpaper or with a nail file prior to planting. Alternatively to scarification, cold stratification can be used to promote germination. The seeds should be placed in a moist medium such as sand, coco coir, or peat during a cold stratification period of 4 to 8 weeks at temperatures around 40ºF. After that period, move to temperatures around 70ºF for germination. B. australis seeds should be sown no more than 1/2 inch deep. Use a well draining potting mix. Many of the seeds should germinate within 2 - 4 weeks. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
