Astrophytum asterias, commonly known as sand dollar or star cactus, is a low growing globus succulent in the Cactaceae family. A. asterias is native to southern Texas and northern Mexico where it can be found growing in a hot, dry climate with rocky soils. The small round and spineless cactus only grows up to 1 to 2 inches tall and 2 to 6 inches in diameter with 7 to 10 ribs. The epidermis is lime green or bluish green with tufts of wool at the areole sites. The epidermis may also have speckles of white trichomes spread across the whole cactus based on phenotypic expression. Astrophytum asterias is endangered from over harvesting due to its close resemblance to a highly sought after psychoactive species, while also battling habitat destruction due to agricultural, recreational, and transportational development in these areas. This species is readily propagated by seed and conservation attempts are being achieved through nursery propagation. Astrophytum asterias typically bloom in the late spring to early summer months with flowers relatively larger than the cactus itself. These flowers resemble daisies and are white to yellow in color. Light exposure of full sun to partial shade is ideal for this species. Astrophytum asterias does best in breathable containers filled with well draining inorganic soils.  Water adequately during summer and keep dry during winter as the species is prone to rot. USDA plant hardiness zones 9a to 11b.

Astrophytum asterias seeds require consistent moisture and humidity to germinate, but soil should not be soaking wet. Cloning boxes, ziplock bags, and other containers that retain moisture are ideal to store sown pots. Use a well draining sterilized soil mix. Seeds should be sown on top of potting mixture and lightly covered with a thin layer of sand or potting mix, just enough to cover the seeds. Germinating pots should be kept indoors out of extreme light and heat. Ideal germination temperatures range from 75°F to 85°F. Germination typically takes 1 to 3 weeks to occur. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
