Aronia melanocarpa, commonly known as the black chokeberry, is a small annual shrub in the rose family of Rosaceae. While native to North America exclusively, melanocarpa is grown in deciduous regions around the world. Aronia melanocarpa has a 3’-5’ vase-like structure with slender and multiple stems. This species has small, white flowers and has an especially tart fruit. The shrub is both grown for aesthetics and the distinctive tartness of the fruit for jams and jellies. Aronia melanocarpa is also known for its ability to withstand extremely low temperatures. Some modern sources even suggest that the black chokeberry is a “superfruit”. USDA hardiness zones 3-8.

Soak the Aronia melanocarpa seeds in water for 24 hours prior to planting. Plant the seeds 3 to 4 inches deep in a well draining potting soil mix. Keep the soil moist, but not soaking wet and keep between 65°F and 75°F for best results. Seeds typically take 21-28 days to germinate, but can take longer. Even in ideal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic. Aronia melanocarpa does well in most soil types as long as it has partial to full sun exposure.
