Arisaema flavum, commonly called the yellow cobra lily or the yellow jack in the pulpit, is a flowering perennial plant in the arum family of Araceae. This species is native to north-eastern Africa and southern Asia. Arisaema flavum grows from corms and grows to heights of 8 to 30 inches tall at maturity. The leaves are composed of 5 to 11 leaflets and the flowers are cylindrical, hooded, and yellow. A. flavum corms are sometimes dried, powdered, cooked, and eaten as a famine food. Arisaema flavum is preferred over other species of Arisaema as a famine food because of its more acceptable flavor. USDA hardiness zones 4 through 8.
Soak the Arisaema flavum seeds in room temperature water for 48 hours, changing the water several times prior to planting. Sow the seeds 1/8 inch deep in a well draining potting mix. Keep the soil moist, but not soaking wet, and keep between 65°F and 80°F for best results. Seeds typically take 2 to 9 weeks to germinate, but can take longer. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
