I’m Alpinia malaccensis, commonly called Malacca ginger, is a robust herb native to Indonesia and Malaysia. It is strongly aromatic when it is bruised. A. malaccensis produces 6-12 foot long leafy stems from its rhizome. It is cultivated in north-eastern India, Indonesia and southern China for its use as a spice and vegetable. This plant has many medicinal uses from curing wounds and sores with the rhizome, to bathing people with fever with extracts from the plant. Hardy to zones 8-11.
For best results, soak the seeds in warm water for 12-24 hours before planting. Plant seeds ½ an inch deep in a well draining potting soil. Keep soil moist but not soaking wet and keep between 70°F to 80°F. Germination can be slow and sporadic even in optimal conditions.
