Acorus americanus, the American sweet flag, is a wetland plant that is native to the northern United States and southern Canada. A. Americanus is a perennial plant that has wide, flat, green leaves that grow up directly from the rhizomes. The flowers are small and arranged along a stalk/shoot. When fertilized the flowers produce a berry with a jelly inside. The foliage has a citrus-like spicy aromatic quality, and can be used to flavor beer. This plant is protected as a state endangered species in Pennsylvania. This plant has been used extensively as a food additive and medicinal herb by Native Americans and early European settlers. USDA Hardiness Zones 3-6.

Acorus americanus seeds should be placed in a moist medium such as sand, coco coir, or peat during a cold stratification period of 4 to 8 weeks at temperatures around 40ºF. After that period, move to temperatures around 70ºF for germination. Seeds should be sprinkled across the surface of your soil medium and lightly pressed in, but not covered. Use a well draining potting mix, but water seeds thoroughly and regularly and/or use a humidity bag or dome to retain moisture. A. americanus is a wetland plant that can even germinate in standing water, but naturally prefers to drop the seeds onto the surface of moist soil and let them germinate there. A. americanus seeds will germinate in approximately 2 to 4 weeks after sowing. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
