Ziziphus mauritiana, commonly called the Indian jujube, Chinese date, Chinese apple, or dunks, is a tropical-subtropical small tree in the buckthorn family of Rhamnaceae. Ziziphus mauritiana is often confused with its close relative, the Chinese jujube (z. jujuba). Z. mauritiana are thorny evergreen trees with elegant drooping branches reaching heights of up to 45 feet tall. Ziziphus mauritiana trees are grown primarily for their prolific fruit production, each tree can yield up to 440 lbs of fresh fruit per year during their prime bearing age. The fruit are eaten fresh, stewed, or dried, and the unripened fruit are commonly candied. The plant has also been used medicinally for a wide range of uses. USDA hardiness zones 7 to 10.

Ziziphus Mauritiana have a hard seed coat that can slow and reduce germination rates. Treated seeds typically germinate in 1 to 2 weeks, whereas untreated seeds can take 6 weeks or longer to germinate. Scarify the seeds by using sandpaper or a knife to appraise or remove the seed coat to allow water to enter the seed. Plant the seeds ½ inch deep in a well draining potting soil. Keep the seeds moist, but not soaking wet, and keep between 65°F and 80°F for best results.
