Zizia aurea, commonly called golden alexanders, is a perennial herbaceous plant in the carrot family of Apiaceae native to Canada and the United States. Z. aurea grows up to 30 inches tall and have alternately attached odd-pinnate compound leaves measuring 3.25 inches long and 2 inches wide. Plants produce small yellow flowers arranged in an umbel during May and June. Each individual flower yields a small o longed fruit containing two seeds If fertilized. When the cool weather of fall sets in, both the leaves and the fruits of Zizia aurea turn purple. Plants prefer full sun to partial shade and moist growing conditions, but can tolerate some drought. USDA hardiness zones 4 through 9.

Zizia aurea seeds require a period of cold stratification in order to germinate reliably. Fold the seeds into a moist, but not soaking wet paper towel and place inside a sealed air-tight plastic bag. Leave the bag in the refrigerator for 60 days prior to planting. After cold stratification, place the seeds on the surface of a well draining potting soil mix and cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil. Keep the soil moist, but not soaking wet, and keep around 70°F to 75°F for best results. Germination typically takes 2 to 3 weeks to occur. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
