Zelkova serrata, known as Japanese Zelkova, is a fast-growing, deciduous tree native to Japan, Korea, and Taiwan. It is prized for its graceful vase-like shape, attractive exfoliating bark, and serrated, elm-like leaves that turn vivid shades of orange, red, and yellow in autumn. Reaching 50–80 feet (15–24 meters) tall, this tree is resistant to Dutch elm disease and is widely used in urban landscapes and parks as a shade or street tree. It tolerates wind, pollution, and a range of soils. Suitable for USDA Hardiness Zones 5–8.

To germinate Zelkova serrata seeds, cold stratify for 60–90 days at 35–41°F (2–5°C). After stratification, sow seeds 1/4 inch (6 mm) deep in a moist, well-draining mix. Maintain a temperature of 65–75°F (18–24°C) and provide bright, indirect light. Germination typically takes 2–4 weeks. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into individual pots and grow in a sheltered location before moving to their permanent outdoor site.
