Yucca filifera is a woody perennial tree like succulent belonging to the asparagus family, Agavaceae. Yucca filifera is native to the southwest United States spanning from Utah to Mexico. Its leaves are long and narrow in a rosette arrangement with high fiber content in each blade. The tree can reach up to 30 feet tall at maturity. It has historically been used as a material crop as the leaves produce fiber for weaving. The roots, flowers, and fruit are edible. Y. filifera thrive in full sun and require regular watering through summer/hot seasons and reduced watering throughout winter. USDA plant hardiness zones 5a to 11b.
Yucca filifera seeds require consistent moisture and humidity to germinate, but soil should not be soaking wet. Cloning boxes, ziplock bags, and other containers that retain moisture are ideal to store sown pots. Use a well draining sterilized potting mix. Seeds should be sown ⅛ inch deep in separate pots. Germinating pots should be kept indoors out of extreme light and heat. Ideal germination temperatures range from 60°F to 70°F. Germination may take a few weeks to several months to occur. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
