Vitex agnus-castus, commonly referred to as chaste tree, is a deciduous flowering large shrub or small tree native to the Mediterranean region. The plant grows to a height of 3 to 16 feet (1m to 5m) tall. It prefers full sun, but can tolerate some shade, and prefers well draining soils. V. agnus-castus produces purple flower spikes in midsummer that attract butterflies as pollinators. In warm climates the plant can get much larger, as the plant tends to die back to its roots in colder climates. The winter dieback does not affect the flowering as the plant flowers from new wood. Traditional medical uses for the plant include being used as an aphrodisiac, an abortifacient, as well as amelioration of women's reproductive health issues. Adverse effects of the plant can include nausea, gastrointestinal discomfort, menstrual issues, fatigue, headache, and skin disorders. Consult a healthcare professional before using chaste tree as a treatment for any ailment. The plant has historically been used as a spice. Vitex have been used in religious ceremonies in the Mediterranean region. The plant is hardy to USDA hardiness zone 7, the plant can grow but will dieback to the roots in zones 5 and 6.
Vitex agnus-castus seeds germinate best after a period of cold stratification. Place the seeds in a moist, but not soaking wet sterile potting medium, and place in a plastic bag. Place the bag containing the seeds and moist medium in the refrigerator for 3 weeks prior to planting. Sow the seeds 1/8th inch (3mm) deep in a moist, but not soaking wet potting medium. After sowing, keep warm, between 70F and 80F (21C and 27C). Seeds typically germinate within 3 weeks, but can take up to 2 months. Even with optimal germination conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
