Veratrum album, commonly known as White Hellebore or False Hellebore, is a toxic perennial herbaceous plant native to Europe and parts of Asia. It grows 3–6 feet (0.9–1.8 meters) tall and features striking pleated leaves and tall flower spikes of greenish-white star-like blooms in summer. This plant thrives in moist, rich soils and partial sun, often found in mountain meadows and woodlands. While historically used in traditional medicine, all parts are poisonous and should be handled with care. Suitable for USDA Hardiness Zones 4–7.
To germinate Veratrum album seeds, a double dormancy period is often required. Start with a warm stratification at 68–75°F (20–24°C) for 2–3 months, followed by cold stratification at 35–41°F (2–5°C) for 3 months. Sow seeds on the surface of moist soil and do not cover, as light aids germination. Maintain humidity and patience, as germination may take 6–18 months. Once seedlings emerge, transplant into individual pots and grow in cool, moist conditions for at least one season before planting out.
