Thelocactus nidulans, commonly called birds nest cactus, is a perennial globus flowering plant belonging to the cactus family of Cactaceae. Thelocactus nidulans is native to Mexico and is commonly found growing in the Chihuahuan Desert. The main stem is globus and can reach up to 6 inches in height and 8 inches in diameter. It is covered in conical tubercles that house long spines that resemble a bird's nest, giving this plant its common name. Spines are variable in length and are pale white to dark brown. T. nidulans is grown as an ornamental plant for its unique appearance and drought tolerance. The plant thrives in full sun to partial shade and well draining soils. It should be more frequently watered during summer and hot periods, and watered less in cooler periods such as winter. USDA plant hardiness zones 9a to 11b.

Thelocactus nidulans seeds require consistent moisture and humidity to germinate, but soil should not be soaking wet. Cloning boxes, ziplock bags, and other containers that retain moisture are ideal to store sown pots. Keep sown seeds well ventilated to prevent fungal growth. Use a well draining sterilized soil mix. Seeds are extremely small and should be directly sown on top of potting mixture (NOT BURIED). Germinating pots should be kept indoors out of extreme light and heat. Keep sown seeds between 75°F and 85°F for best results. Germination typically takes 1 to 2 weeks to occur. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
