Stetsonia coryne, commonly called the toothpick cactus, is a large tree-like species of cactus native to Argentina, Bolivia, and Paraguay. Stetsonia is a monotypic genus, meaning S. coryne is the only species in the genus. Mature plants reach heights of up to 30 feet tall and produce large white flowers which yield yellow fruit with edible white flesh. Stetsonia coryne is commonly grown as an ornamental plant and used in desert landscaping. Plants prefer full sun to partial shade. USDA hardiness zone 9a.

Plant the Stetsonia coryne seeds directly on the surface of a well draining potting soil mix and sprinkle a thin layer of soil over the seeds, just enough to cover them. Keep the soil moist, but not soaking wet, and keep between 65°F and 75°F for best results. Humidity improves germination, so covering the pot with plastic wrap, a plastic bag, or a humidity dome may be beneficial. Germination typically takes 1 to 4 weeks to occur. Once seeds have germinated, reduce humidity and allow the soil to dry out in between waterings. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
