Staphylea trifolia, commonly known as american bladdernut, is a deciduous shrub or small tree in the Staphyleaceae, or bladdernut family. Native to eastern North America, it thrives in moist woodlands, stream banks, and shaded ravines. S. trifolia typically grows 10 to 15 feet tall and 8 to 10 feet wide, with an upright, multi-stemmed habit that spreads by suckers to form thickets. Its compound leaves are made up of three finely-toothed, medium-green leaflets which are oppositely arranged. S. trifolia is valued in naturalized gardens and woodland settings for its unique seed capsules and attractive form. It grows best in partial to full shade and prefers moist, well-drained soils.USDA plant hardiness zones 4 to 7.
Staphylea trifolia seeds require a period of cold stratification to improve germination. To prepare the seeds, soak them in warm water for 24 hours to help soften the seed coat. After soaking, place the seeds in a ziplock bag with a small amount of moist, sterile substrate, such as sand or perlite. Store the bag in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 months to mimic winter conditions. After stratification, plant the seeds about 1/4 inch deep in a well-draining soil mix. Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Ideal germination temperatures range from 60-70°F. Germination typically takes 4 to 8 weeks. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
