Selenicereus grandiflorus, commonly called the queen of the night, vanilla cactus, night blooming cereus, and several other common names, is a tropical vining species of cacti native to the Caribbean, Mexico, and Central America. Selenicereus grandiflorus can grow up to 30 feet tall and 1 foot wide at maturity and have massive white flowers that can be up to 9 inches long and 15 inches wide. True species are extremely rare in cultivation, because similar looking species and hybrids are oftentimes sold as true Selenicereus grandiflorus plants/seeds. S. grandiflorus are considered to be epiphytic or hemi-epiphytic, climbing trees and rock faces at high altitudes. They have escaped cultivation and have become naturalized in some regions in Florida, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Puerto Rico. The species has been used in traditional medicine as a heat tonic to treat high blood pressure and congestive heart failure. Selenicereus grandiflorus are hardy to zones 10-11.

Sow the Selenicereus grandiflorus seeds on the surface of a well draining potting mix. Mist the seeds with a spray bottle, and cover the soil with plastic wrap or a plastic bag to retain humidity. Keep the soil moist, but not soaking wet, and keep between 70°F and 80°F for best results. Once germinated, slowly uncover over several days to acclimate the seedlings to the ambient humidity. Germination typically takes 1 to 6 weeks to occur. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
