Sarracenia purpurea, commonly known as Purple Pitcher Plant, is a cold-hardy, carnivorous plant native to bogs and wetlands of North America. It forms low rosettes of maroon and green pitcher-shaped leaves that trap insects, which the plant digests to supplement its nutrient intake. In spring to early summer, it produces nodding, deep-red flowers on tall stalks. This species prefers full sun and acidic, waterlogged conditions, and is ideal for bog gardens, wetland restoration, or container cultivation in sphagnum moss. Suitable for USDA Hardiness Zones 2–7.

To germinate Sarracenia purpurea seeds, cold stratify for 6–8 weeks at 35–41°F (2–5°C) in moist sphagnum moss or paper towels. After stratification, sow seeds on the surface of damp sphagnum moss or a peat-sand mix. Do not cover, as light aids germination. Keep temperatures between 70–75°F (21–24°C) and maintain high humidity with distilled or rainwater. Germination may take several weeks to months. Keep young plants in bright light and high humidity, and avoid fertilization.
